In the aftermath of the Moscow attack in a Russian concert hall, four men have been arrested. The suspects from Tajikistan appeared before a Moscow court on Sunday.

The hearing took place as Russia observed a National Day of Mourning for Friday’s attack on the suburban Crocus City Hall concert venue that killed 137 people. Events at cultural institutions were canceled Sunday and flags were lowered to half-staff. 

They were formally charged with terrorism. It was also widely reported with photographic evidence that the men bore visible signs of severe beatings.

Moscow Attack

Automatic rifles, a pistol, knives, and firebombs, were used in the attack that killed 137 and left 154 wounded. 

President Vladimir Putin condemned the atrocity as a "bloody, barbaric terrorist act," vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice. The swift apprehension of the four suspects, allegedly attempting to flee to Ukraine, marked a significant development in the investigation.

The suspects have been identified as Dalerdzhon Barotovich Mirzoyev, 32, Saidakrami Murodali Rachabalizoda,30, Shamsidin Fariduni,25, and Muhammadsobir Fayzov, 19.

 Mirzoyev and Rachabalizoda admitted guilt following the charges.

Torture Suspected

 Fayzov was wheeled into the courtroom from a hospital bed. Rachabalizoda also had a heavily bandaged ear. According to Russian media one of the suspects had his ear cut off during the interrogation. 

All the men showed visible signs of trauma.

Video footage capturing the suspects being dragged through the court building further fueled concerns about their treatment while in custody.

International Dynamics

International dynamics further complicated the narrative, with the United States sharing intelligence about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow prior to the assault on the music hall. 

An affiliate of the Islamic State (IS) group, IS-K, claimed responsibility after the deadly attack.

Russian politicians including Putin were blaming Ukraine for the attack. Ukraine and other countries deny they were involved. And claim that IS-K is solely responsible for the tragic incident.
