The San Diego Comic-Con Convention, an annual event celebrates comic books and pop culture. In 2024, it became the unexpected focal point of a major operation spotlighting human trafficking at Comic-Con.

Fourteen people were arrested, and ten victims were rescued as authorities cracked down on human trafficking at Comic-Con. The annual event, which draws over 100,000 attendees to the San Diego Convention Center, concluded on Sunday with a high-profile police presence.

Human Trafficking at Comic-Con

The San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force (SDHTTF) executed a strategic three-day operation before the weekend's main events. As part of this operation, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced in a news release that ten victims were rescued, including a 16-year-old girl.

"Unfortunately, sex traffickers capitalize on large-scale events such as Comic-Con to exploit their victims for profit," said Bonta. "These arrests send a clear message to potential offenders that their criminal behavior will not be tolerated."

Christopher Davis, acting special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Diego, emphasized the commitment to justice, stating, "When people use these events as an opportunity to prey upon minors, HSI and our law enforcement partners will find you and bring you before a court of law to face criminal charges. There is no place for alleged predators to operate in our city."

Undercover Operations

The anti-human trafficking operation was meticulously planned, targeting both sex buyers and traffickers while focusing on recovering potential victims. Undercover law enforcement personnel posed as sex buyers to identify traffickers and potential victims, effectively dismantling criminal networks.

Additionally, undercover officers posted fake advertisements soliciting sex, aiming to attract and arrest those seeking to exploit vulnerable individuals. As a result of the operation, 14 sex buyers were apprehended, nine adult potential victims of sex trafficking were recovered and offered services, and a 16-year-old juvenile was successfully rescued.

San Diego Sheriff Kelly Martinez highlighted the severity of human trafficking, stating, “There is no more insidious crime than human trafficking. The coercion and violence which enslave people for profit and places them into forced labor or sex is criminal. As the Sheriff, I support the efforts of all our justice partners in holding perpetrators accountable. I appreciate the focus that was placed on the recent convention to identify and rescue victims of human trafficking.”

Task Force Resources

The San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force is a collaborative effort, drawing on resources and expertise from various agencies, including the Department of Justice, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, California Highway Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, National City Police Department, San Diego City Attorney’s Office, San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, San Diego County Probation Department, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, San Diego Police Department, Southwest Border High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California.

Child Welfare Services and advocates for adult and juvenile support services were on-site to provide immediate assistance to victims. Additionally, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service contributed to the operation, further bolstering the task force's resources.

“The San Diego Police Department is a proud member of the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force,” stated San Diego Police Chief Wahl. “Working together, teams identified and arrested more than a dozen individuals participating in these illegal acts in our city over the weekend. This successful operation recovered 10 victims of human trafficking, including a girl of just 16 years old. These results show our collective dedication to combating human trafficking and holding criminals accountable are working.”

The success of this operation at the San Diego Comic-Con highlights the effectiveness of collaborative law enforcement efforts in combating human trafficking. By leveraging the resources of multiple agencies, the SDHTTF sends a powerful message: no opportunity for exploitation will be tolerated, and justice will prevail.
