Vivek Sharma, Meta’s VP of Horizon, called the incident “absolutely unfortunate” but told The Verge that it was good feedback because he wanted to make the Safe Zone blocking tool “trivially easy and findable.”
The Safe Zone feature can be activated by a user if they feel threatened. It’s designed to prevent others from interacting with them.
Kristina Milian, a spokesperson for Meta, told MIT Technology Review that “the company would continue to improve its user interface to understand how its tools are used and allow users to report issues easily and reliably.”
In November, the FT revealed a leaked separate memo in which Meta executive Andrew Bosworth said that it was “practically impossible” to moderate the behavior of metaverse users on a meaningful scale.
