AbbVie Strikes $2B Licensing Deal with IGI Therapeutics

AbbVie $2B Licensing Agreement

In a move that signals intensifying ambitions in the cancer therapeutics arena, pharmaceutical titan AbbVie Inc. unveiled Thursday a blockbuster $2 billion exclusive licensing agreement with Swiss biotech firm IGI Therapeutics SA, advised by Covington & Burling LLP. The deal grants AbbVie the rights to ISB 2001, a cutting-edge trispecific antibody treatment that could redefine therapy options for multiple myeloma and autoimmune diseases.

The Science Behind the Billions

At the core of this high-stakes collaboration is ISB 2001, an investigational drug currently in Phase 1 trials for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. The therapy is a trispecific T-cell engager, a class of immunotherapy drugs designed to bind to multiple targets simultaneously, thereby enhancing the immune system's cancer-fighting capabilities.

Unlike traditional single-target or even bispecific antibodies, ISB 2001 leverages three antigen-binding sites — focusing on B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA) and CD38, both of which are associated with aggressive myeloma cells. The drug is built on IGI’s proprietary BEAT protein platform, which seeks to overcome resistance seen in previous generations of antibody therapies.

“Multispecifics like trispecific antibodies are the next frontier,” said Dr. Roopal Thakkar, AbbVie’s Executive Vice President of R&D and Chief Scientific Officer. “They offer the potential for deeper and more durable responses in a space that continues to be marked by unmet medical needs.”

Breaking Down the Deal

The licensing agreement includes:

  • An upfront payment of $700 million from AbbVie to IGI

  • Up to $1.225 billion in milestone-based payments covering development, regulatory approvals, and commercialization triggers

  • “Double-digit” royalties on net product sales

AbbVie now holds exclusive development and commercialization rights for ISB 2001 across North America, Europe, Japan, and Greater China, dramatically expanding its immuno-oncology portfolio with a single, strategic strike.

IGI’s Moment of Validation

For IGI Therapeutics, the agreement marks a watershed moment.

“ISB 2001 showcases the strength of our BEAT platform,” said Cyril Konto, CEO and President of IGI. “This partnership is not just a commercial milestone but a scientific validation of our team’s relentless pursuit of better treatments for complex cancers.”

The drug’s architecture features two distinct antigen binders specifically tailored for myeloma-associated markers, a design intended to boost binding strength (avidity) and improve safety profiles compared to earlier-generation bispecifics.

A Pattern of Aggressive Expansion

This multi-billion-dollar deal with IGI comes just days after AbbVie announced another significant investment — a $2.1 billion acquisition of Capstain Therapeutics Inc., a developer of next-generation cell therapies. Together, these moves paint a picture of a company on a mission to dominate the next wave of oncology innovations.

The Legal Minds Behind the Agreement

IGI was represented by Covington & Burling LLP, with key roles played by partners J.D. Weinberg, Van Ellis, and Winsome Cheung. AbbVie’s legal counsel has not yet been disclosed.
