His father, John Peters, said that Andrew wanted to make a difference and was a strong proponent of doing what was honorable even at great personal cost.

Andrew volunteered to join the fight against the Kremlin’s invasion in Ukraine and arrived there with his own armor and military gear.

He is the seventh known American to be killed in Ukraine in the last year.

The United Nations has verified over 8,000 civilian deaths since the invasion began, and more than 100,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed or wounded.

Peters’ family is waiting for his remains and personal belongings to be shipped home.

He said his son moved back to his hometown in Marshfield, Wisconsin after serving 4-years in Afghanistan. He enjoyed hiking and playing pickup hockey in a league with his father.
