Anthropic, one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence developers, has agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement to resolve claims from a group of authors who accused the company of misusing their works to train its flagship large language model, Claude. The authors revealed the deal to a California federal court on Friday, describing it as a historic victory in the collision between technology and copyright.

The agreement, which was first announced in August without financial details, comes after U.S. District Judge William Alsup ruled in June that while Anthropic’s use of copyrighted material could qualify as fair use for training purposes, the company still had to face trial on allegations of piracy.

Authors Hail a “First of Its Kind” Victory

Justin A. Nelson of Susman Godfrey LLP, counsel for the authors, called the resolution groundbreaking.

"This landmark settlement far surpasses any other known copyright recovery," Nelson said. "It is the first of its kind in the AI era. It will provide meaningful compensation for each class work and sets a precedent requiring AI companies to pay copyright owners."

The class action is one of dozens targeting AI firms, alleging wholesale scraping of copyrighted material from online repositories without permission. According to Friday’s filing, the $1.5 billion fund will translate to roughly $3,000 per copyrighted work.

"This settlement sends a powerful message to AI companies and creators alike that taking copyrighted works from pirate websites is wrong," Nelson added.

Ripple Effects Across the AI Industry

The settlement could become a watershed moment for copyright enforcement in the AI industry, which has been facing mounting lawsuits from artists, musicians, news outlets, and authors. By attaching a billion-dollar price tag to unlicensed use, the case may set a financial and legal benchmark for future disputes.

Anthropic, which has positioned itself as a safer alternative to other AI giants, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
