House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has strongly criticized the U.S.-Mexico Biden border deal endorsed by the Senate.

Johnson contends that Biden possesses the executive authority to address the challenges at the southern border without the need for new legislation.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Johnson stated, "President Biden falsely claimed yesterday he needs Congress to pass a new law to allow him to close the southern border, but he knows that is untrue."

Johnson Letters

Johnson previously sent a letter to Biden  last year in which he emphasized that the President could, and should, take immediate executive action to mitigate the crisis.

 He outlined specific steps Biden could undertake, including ending catch-and-release, halting the exploitation of parole authority, and reinstating the Remain in Mexico program. He also recommended expanding the use of expedited removal authority and resuming the construction of the border wall. 

The crisis at the Texas border has escalated with Texas Governor Greg Abbott taking measures to secure the border and the Biden administration fighting him in court.

According to Johnson, leveraging existing legal authority is crucial for reclaiming the nation's sovereignty and ending the mass release of illegal aliens into the country.

Biden Border Deal

The Republicans remain divided over its support for the pending bipartisan border deal. Johnson's stance comes in response to Biden's statement on Friday, where the President pledged to close the U.S.-Mexico border "when it becomes overwhelmed" if the bipartisan border security legislation clears Congress. 

Biden touted the proposed legislation as the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border in the nation's history.

The border bill is currently undergoing negotiations in the Senate, accompanied by funding for Ukraine and other U.S. allies. Johnson, in a letter to his colleagues, asserted that the GOP-led House would reject the negotiated legislation if the rumors about the border deal proved true, dubbing it "dead on arrival."

Bipartisan solution out of reach? 

The White House has responded by urging House Republicans to choose between finding a bipartisan solution and scoring political points.

 White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated, "House Republicans, they have a choice to make. They have to choose whether they want to solve a problem, actually solve a problem like the Senate is trying to do in a bipartisan way. Or get in the way and score political points."

Amidst the political wrangling, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed a record-breaking 302,024 total encounters at the U.S. southern border in December 2023.

The momentum of the surge has been growing since Biden took office and overturned all the Trump policies that had suppressed traffic on the border.

Mexican citizens accounted for 56,236 arrests in December, Venezuelans were second with 46,937.

Arrests of Guatemalans, Hondurans and Colombians also surged rounding out the top five nationalities.
