Vince McMahon, of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), has stepped down from his prominent roles within the company and its parent organization following serious allegations of sex trafficking, abuse, and sexual assault. The WWE founder resigned just a day after a former employee, Janel Grant, filed a lawsuit detailing her experiences of abuse within the organization.

WWE founder resigns

McMahon's decision to resign from his positions as TKO executive chairman and the TKO board of directors was conveyed to WWE employees through an email from WWE President Nick Khan on Friday night.

This abrupt departure signifies McMahon's disassociation from the day-to-day operations of WWE and its overarching parent company.

The lawsuit filed by Janel Grant outlines her victimization through physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault, and trafficking during her tenure at WWE.

Grant's attorney, Ann Callis, stated, "Today’s complaint seeks to hold accountable two WWE executives who sexually assaulted and trafficked Plaintiff Janel Grant."

It is also alleged that the organization facilitated or turned a blind eye to the abuse and then swept it under the rug."

McMahon vehemently denied these allegations, asserting that the lawsuit is filled with "lies, obscene made-up instances that never occurred, and is a vindictive distortion of the truth."

Despite his denial, McMahon chose to resign, citing respect for the WWE Universe, TKO business, its board members, shareholders, partners, constituents, and all employees and Superstars who contributed to WWE's global success.

Notably, McMahon has not faced criminal charges in connection with the accusations outlined in the lawsuit.

Prior to his resignation, TKO Group Holdings clarified that McMahon did not control TKO or oversee WWE's day-to-day operations, addressing the serious allegations made by Grant.

Alleged victim sues

Grant's lawsuit includes charges of sex trafficking, civil battery, intentional or negligent infliction of emotional distress, and negligence. Representatives for Grant have yet to respond to requests for comments.

This is not the first time McMahon has faced controversy related to misconduct. In 2022, he stepped down as CEO of WWE after revelations that he had paid nearly $15 million to four women over 16 years to settle claims of sexual misconduct.

Despite relinquishing the CEO role, McMahon retained control over the company as a majority shareholder. He was later reinstated to the company's board in the preceding year.

As the wrestling community grapples with these shocking developments, the resignation of Vince McMahon marks a significant moment in WWE's history, prompting a reevaluation of the culture and practices within the organization.
