Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced on Sunday that his AI startup, xAI has successfully raised $6 billion in a Series B funding round, catapulting the company's valuation to $24 billion.

This investment marks a pivotal moment for the company, which was publicly unveiled in July 2023.

xAI Funding

The latest funding round saw participation from notable investors including Valor Equity Partners, Vy Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Fidelity Management & Research Company, and Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal along with Kingdom Holding. This diverse group of investors underscores the growing confidence in xAI's potential to innovate and lead in the artificial intelligence sector.

With this influx of capital, xAI plans to accelerate the development and market introduction of its products.

"xAI will continue on this steep trajectory of progress over the coming months, with multiple exciting technology updates and products soon to be announced," the company stated. The funds will be used to bring xAI's first products to market, enhance infrastructure, and boost research and development of future technologies.

Elon Musk revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that xAI had a pre-money valuation of $18 billion before the Series B funding round concluded. He hinted at more announcements in the near future, suggesting ongoing dynamic developments within the company.

Grok Chatbot

This funding milestone follows the launch of xAI’s Grok chatbot in November, which has been integrated into the X platform for subscribers. In December, xAI disclosed in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) its intent to raise $1 billion in capital from equity investors, with $134 million already secured at that time.

Despite previous denials from Musk about xAI raising capital, the substantial Series B funding demonstrates the company's robust growth and strategic ambitions. Musk had earlier refuted reports of xAI discussing valuations between $15 billion to $20 billion and the SEC fundraising filing by asserting, "We are not raising money right now."

In addition to its financial achievements, xAI is actively expanding its team. The company announced it is "hiring for numerous roles and seeks talented individuals ready to join a small team focused on making a meaningful impact on the future of humanity."

Musk further emphasized xAI’s mission on X, encouraging those who are passionate about understanding the universe through rigorous truth-seeking to join the venture.

Elon Musk founded xAI to compete with OpenAI, a company he co-founded but left in 2018.

His departure was driven by concerns that OpenAI was lagging behind Google in the AI race and potential conflicts of interest with his AI pursuits at Tesla. Musk has since been critical of OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft, arguing it deviates from the company's original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity. OpenAI has contested Musk's claims, stating he left the board because he sought control over the company’s direction and leadership.

Earlier this year, he filed a lawsuit arguing OpenAI breached its founding agreement to develop AI for the benefit of humanity rather than for profit because of the company's partnership with Microsoft.
