“We are beyond furious at the state of Idaho. They have failed us. Please give us some time. This was very unexpected. We appreciate all your love and support.”

Retired NYPD inspector Paul Mauro, who has followed the case closely, suggested the plea deal might have included an agreement from Kohberger to disclose key information.

“If they don’t get the why, this is the most incomprehensible deal of all time,” Mauro told NewsNation

“If Kohberger agreed to truthfully explain what happened, that could be a reason for the deal to have materialized so unexpectedly.”

Unexpected Timing and Legal Maneuvering

The guilty plea announcement came just hours after a Pennsylvania court held a hearing about whether out-of-state witnesses could be compelled to testify in Idaho.

Despite ongoing pretrial wrangling, including revelations of Kohberger’s autism diagnosis and claims of missed discovery deadlines, Judge Steven Hippler was unmoved by the defense’s arguments.

The trial had been scheduled to begin with opening statements on August 18, 2025.
