The proceedings reached a fever pitch as Democrats chastised Aviva Wein for representing Johnson & Johnson, given the company’s involvement in significant lawsuits regarding tainted talc and the opioid epidemic. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., warned Wein to consider the merits of these lawsuits carefully.

Wein, in her defense, emphasized that the issue isn’t about stifling aggrieved consumers or shielding companies from accountability. “In the current system,” she concluded, “plaintiffs have become nothing more than pawns in the game structured by plaintiffs’ counsel and litigation financiers to generate profits for themselves.”
