Earlier this year in September, Bannon requested a new trial. This was rejected. In response, the Assistant U.S. Attorney assigned tot he case, J.P. Cooney, argued before the court that Bannon should face the maximum penalty for his crimes. The state urged the judge to convict Bannon and sentence him to at least six months behind bars and $100,000 fine (per count of contempt of congress). The judge was not persuaded and eventually decided that the appropriate sentence would be between $1,000 and $9,500, and a prison sentence of four months. The Judge stated that her decision was in part based off her opinion of Bannon’s “low risk of recidivism”.
In defense of Steve Bannon, Bannon’s lawyer talks of appealing the decision, saying Bannon “never got to tell his story”. If Bannon chooses to appeal the conviction, he will have until November 15, 2022 to do so.
The case is U.S. v. Bannon, case number 1:21-cr-00670, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
