The Cornell 7 case has drawn renewed scrutiny after Cornell University disputed claims that seven fraternity members faced little more than essay-writing as a consequence of an alleged 2024 sexual assault. The university said Monday that some of the students were suspended or expelled following an internal disciplinary process, while the accuser's lawsuit alleges that the men were temporarily suspended and given an opportunity to “mitigate their conduct” by submitting essays.

The allegations concern an incident at Cornell's Chi Phi fraternity house in Ithaca, New York, in October 2024. A former student, identified in court filings as Jane Doe, filed a civil lawsuit against Cornell and seven former or current students in September.

The defendants have not been criminally charged, and the allegations in the civil lawsuit have not been established in court.

Cornell Disputes Essay-Only Punishment Claim

Cornell said in a statement that it was inaccurate to characterize essays as the sole consequence imposed on the students.

“None of the individuals charged were offered the opportunity to write essays as a sole consequence of their involvement,” the university said, according to the New York Post.

Cornell also criticized what it described as a continuing narrative that the university imposed minimal consequences.

“A continuation of the false narrative that there were minimal consequences in this case is irresponsible, will make survivors feel less safe and supported, and will perpetuate the underreporting of sexual assault,” the university said.

The school said its internal disciplinary proceedings resulted in suspensions and expulsions involving some of the students. Cornell has not publicly disclosed which of the seven students were expelled, which were suspended or whether any remain enrolled, citing student privacy requirements.

Civil Lawsuit Presents Different Allegations

The lawsuit presents allegations that differ from the account contained in the university's disciplinary proceedings and the original criminal investigation.

The former student alleges that members of the Chi Phi fraternity drugged and sexually assaulted her at the fraternity house. The complaint also alleges that fraternity members discussed the incident in a group chat.

According to the lawsuit, two fraternity members encouraged the woman to consume a substance described as ketamine before the alleged sexual assaults.

The New York Post previously reported on screenshots of a fraternity group chat that allegedly contained sexually explicit comments concerning the woman.

The allegations remain disputed and have not resulted in criminal convictions.

DA Reopens Investigation into the Cornell 7

The controversy escalated after Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten announced that his office was reopening its criminal investigation.

The original investigation into the alleged 2024 incident did not result in criminal charges. Van Houten told ABC News that the allegations contained in the civil lawsuit were “dramatically different” from what investigators were told during the original inquiry.

The district attorney said the woman did not report at the time that she had been drugged or sexually assaulted. He also said the original investigation did not receive the group-chat photograph that appears in the newer civil complaint.

Van Houten said the woman had acknowledged voluntarily consuming drugs and alcohol and had not alleged at the time that she was physically helpless, unconscious or incapacitated.

The renewed investigation means prosecutors will now examine the allegations presented in the newer complaint and determine whether additional evidence warrants criminal charges.

‘Cornell 7’ Website Draws Additional Attention

The case has also generated an unusual online campaign.

Toby Morton, a former writer for the television series “South Park,” announced that he created a website called TheCornell7.org to document allegations involving the seven fraternity members.

Morton said on Instagram that he had obtained domain names connected to the case and was researching the men's professional affiliations. His campaign has generated additional attention surrounding the allegations and the university's response.

Morton's involvement has also raised questions about the boundaries between online activism, public accountability and potential harassment. The website's allegations should not be treated as established findings of criminal wrongdoing.

Cornell Faces Questions Over Transparency

Cornell's response comes as the university faces questions about how it handled allegations of sexual misconduct and how much information it can publicly disclose about disciplinary proceedings.

The university maintains that meaningful disciplinary consequences were imposed. At the same time, the accuser's lawsuit argues that the university failed in its responsibilities to protect her and adequately respond to the alleged assault.

The dispute over what disciplinary measures were imposed remains significant because Cornell has not publicly provided a complete accounting of the sanctions against each of the seven defendants.

The case is now proceeding on two separate tracks: the civil lawsuit, which seeks damages from Cornell and the seven defendants, and the reopened criminal investigation by the Tompkins County District Attorney's Office.

Case of Cornell 7 Remains Under Investigation

The seven men named in the civil lawsuit have not been criminally charged in connection with the allegations. As a result, the allegations against them remain allegations unless established through court proceedings.

The case also highlights the different standards and purposes of university disciplinary proceedings, civil litigation and criminal investigations.

For sexual-assault survivors and advocates, the dispute has renewed concerns about whether university disciplinary systems provide adequate accountability. For Cornell, the controversy has centered on its assertion that the university imposed significant consequences while being legally limited in what it can disclose about individual students.

The reopened investigation could provide additional information about the allegations as prosecutors review evidence that was not part of the original criminal inquiry.
