The Minnesota representative also told CNN that part of his campaign is about stirring up “energy” and making sure Democrats have a “competitive race.” Phillips moreover believes his party is shooting itself in the foot by allegedly giving the Republican Party “hundreds of hours of prime-time TV.”
In previous remarks, the lawmaker also stated if his movement only leads to Biden becoming a better, stronger candidate in the general election, he’ll consider that to be a win.
Critics of Phillips, nonetheless, maintain that by running a campaign against the incumbent president, he’s actually weakening Biden, should he find himself up against Trump after the primaries.
Biden dodging Phillips?
So far, the president seems to be steering clear of having any direct tussles with his in-party competitors. Biden has not appeared at one single Democratic primary debate, despite both Phillips and Marianne Williamson – another candidate challenging the president – showing up and answering questions.
