Dell Technologies Downsizes

In a series of internal memos sent to the sales division, Dell executives announced the company's move to become a "leaner" organization. 

The memo, obtained by online outlet Business Insider, outlined the strategic changes aimed at enabling Dell to "win and win big" in the increasingly competitive tech landscape.

One of the most significant aspects of this reorganization is the reduction in workforce. 

According to sources within the company, Dell has initiated layoffs that are expected to bring its global workforce below 100,000 employees. This means that tens of thousands of employees will be affected, marking a drastic reduction in headcount. One laid-off sales employee reported that 65 of their colleagues were let go on a single day, reflecting the scale of these changes.

Strategic Restructuring for Future Growth

Bill Scannell, President of Global Sales & Customer Operations, and John Byrne, President of Sales for Global Regions, detailed the company's new direction in the memo to the sales staff. They revealed that Dell is creating a new global sales organizational structure and operating model designed to streamline operations and improve efficiency.

The restructuring involves merging teams and introducing new tools to "free up" time for sales teams, allowing them to focus more on selling and less on administrative tasks. This change is expected to enhance the company's ability to meet modern customer expectations and engage with them on their terms, whether in-person, online, or through self-service options.

The Role of AI in Dell's Future

A key component of Dell's reorganization is the establishment of a dedicated AI-focused sales unit. This new division is expected to play a crucial role in driving the company's growth in the rapidly expanding AI market. 

Dell Technologies has a $2.1 trillion total addressable market, including emerging sectors like AI, and is committed to capitalizing on these opportunities.

The AI Select Sales team, led by Scott Millard, will be responsible for leading AI initiatives for select accounts, working closely with Dell's product, marketing, and services teams. Additionally, Kyle Dufresne and the AI Solutions Sales team will continue to support the broader go-to-market (GTM) teams in driving AI opportunities across the organization.

One sales team, structure & culture We're taking a big step toward centralizing sales into one organization as the Consumer and Small Business (CSB) and Client Solution Group (CSG) sales teams join Global Sales.

Segmentation and coverage to simplify how we classify and cover customers, we have: Consolidated accounts into fewer segments of similar size. Tightened account executive-to-account ratios across each customer segment with a more integrated and effective Inside Sales-led motion.

Winning in AI: The world of AI is moving fast, and we are expanding our AI GTM capability.

We are standing up a new AI Select Sales team, led by Scott Millard reporting to John, to lead AI pursuits for select accounts in close collaboration with the product, marketing, and services teams.

Kyle Dufresne and the AI Solutions Sales team will continue to support the GTM teams driving enablement and broad AI opportunities.

Through all of this, we are getting leaner. We're streamlining layers of management and reprioritizing where we invest. We don't do this lightly as we know these changes impact people and our teams.

As we simplify, standardize, and focus — and become a more modern organization — we'll extend our lead as the world's best go-to-market sales team. We have a winning strategy to propel our growth. It's a journey, and we'll adjust as we go.
