Gilbert Goons: Rise and Fall of Arizona’s ‘Rich Kid’ Gang

Gilbert Goons Murder Suspects

The “Gilbert Goons” have been linked to a murder that has rocked a quiet Arizona suburb.

The tragic incident occurred last Halloween, ending with the death of 16-year-old Preston Lord. Here's how a group of well-off suburban kids found themselves facing murder charges.

This group of well-off suburban teenagers were considered a close-knit circle of friends. But influenced by social media they ultimately transformed into a violent gang.

The Formation of the Gilbert Goons

The Gilbert Goons were not always the notorious group they have become.

Many of the members were friends from middle and elementary school, growing up together in the affluent community of Gilbert, Arizona.

Over time, their bond morphed into what has been described as a "hybrid gang."

Despite their privileged backgrounds, the group became involved in a series of assaults and public disturbances, which they eagerly documented and shared on social media.

Arizona attorney Billie Tarascio has commented on the role social media played in the group’s evolution into a gang. "It's largely, I think, influenced by social media, specifically Snapchat," Tarascio noted, highlighting how the platform allowed the group to gain notoriety among their peers.

The Halloween Party That Turned Deadly

The Gilbert Goons' most infamous act took place on October 28, 2023, at a Halloween party in Queen Creek, a wealthy suburb southeast of Phoenix.

Over 200 teenagers from local high schools attended the party, which quickly spiraled out of control.

Among the attendees was 16-year-old Preston Lord, a sophomore and basketball player who would tragically lose his life that night.

According to police reports, a fight broke out at the party, which escalated when one of the Goons allegedly pulled a gold chain from Lord’s neck. Lord and his friends attempted to flee but were pursued by the group.

The situation turned deadly when Talan Renner, one of the accused, allegedly punched Lord, knocking him unconscious.

Other members of the group reportedly continued to beat and kick Lord while he lay defenseless on the ground. One witness even saw someone "dance on top of him" as he lay motionless.

He died two days later, on Oct. 30, of traumatic brain injuries.

Crimes Documented on Social Media

A chilling aspect of the Gilbert Goons' criminal behavior is their tendency to document and share their actions on social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram.

Even after Lord's death, members of the group allegedly bragged about the incident online. In one disturbing message shared on Snapchat, Renner reportedly wrote, "I got in a fight, a big group fight, and killed a kid."

Another member, Talyn Vigil, allegedly sent a message stating, "I hit a kid and this kid … hit his head and then they kicked his head in the ground then I got word he died so idk."

These posts, along with videos of the group's other illegal activities, including assaults and underage drinking, have been key pieces of evidence in the investigation. Authorities have expressed concern over the role social media played in not only encouraging but also publicizing the group’s criminal behavior.

Community Reactions and Legal Challenges

The murder of Preston Lord and the investigation into the Gilbert Goons has shocked law enforcement and the community.

Residents of Queen Creek and Gilbert have reported feeling terrorized by the group, with some even stating that their children have begun carrying firearms for protection. The parents of the accused are also facing scrutiny, with questions arising about how their children could become involved in such violent behavior.

Attorney Eric Crocker, who is representing Treston Billey, one of the accused, has criticized the prosecution's portrayal of the group as a "hybrid gang," calling the term "highly prejudicial" and arguing that it could prevent his client from receiving a fair trial.

All seven members of the group pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges on August 8. Their trial is scheduled to begin until July 2025.
