In Democratic circles, there's an increasing fear that if Joe Biden proceeds into the general election for a rematch against former President Trump, he won't be able to bring it home for the party this time.

Concerns of this nature continue to spark speculations that Democrats will eventually get rid of Biden and elect for someone like California Gov. Gavin Newsom to take his place. Thus far, Newsom's repeatedly stated he has no plans to seek the presidency in 2024, but he could very well change his mind.

In the meantime, Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips is one of Biden's primary contenders. Phillips previously stated he entered the election to stop Trump from winning a second term, to give Democrats a better option than Biden, and to usher in a generational shift in political leadership.

Over the weekend, Phillips once again declared that he doesn't believe Biden stands a chance of defeating Trump in 2024.

A closer look at Phillips' 2024 predictions

On social media, the Minnesota congressman directed attention towards polls that show Biden losing to Trump in key states. In doing this, Phillips expressed that despite him previously supporting, campaigning for, and voting for Biden, the numbers clearly show he doesn't have the support to pull off another win.

Phillips likewise stated it would be "delusional" for Democrats to look at Biden's poll numbers and believe he's in a position to win against Trump in 2024.

Interestingly enough, however, the Democratic congressman didn't publicly share how he believes the president would fare against a different Republican nominee, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis or former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

Nevertheless, Phillips has repeatedly referenced Biden's struggling poll numbers when faced with backlash from Democrats who believe he should be rallying around the incumbent president, rather than challenging him.

For what it's worth, Phillips also consistently vows that if Biden ends up winning the party's nomination anyway, he'll happily campaign for the president yet again.

Anything's possible

There are a lot of moving pieces that can impact Biden's reelection run this time around. With Robert F. Kennedy Jr. now running for president as an Independent, certain Democrats feel nervous about this potentially costing Biden some votes.

Likewise, general election polls have shown the president losing in one-on-one matches against both DeSantis and Haley.

While Biden and his allies keep insisting there's a lot of time between now and the general election, it remains to be seen if that's enough to put Democrats' concerns to bed.
