Disney Marvel’s Strategy: Embracing Talent Over Woke Writers

In the wake of the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) strike, which lasted for 146 days, the entertainment industry finds itself at a crossroads. This shift raises questions about the role of woke writers and the quest for high-quality content.

The strike aimed to secure better benefits for scriptwriters and other behind-the-scenes professionals and, in the process, sparked conversations about hiring practices and diversity in the creative realm.

One prominent player in the industry, Disney Marvel, has announced sweeping changes in its approach to television content creation. Marvel Studios is currently in the midst of restructuring its television division.

The primary objective behind this restructuring is to place a more significant emphasis on individual experience, skillset, and salary requirements, as opposed to prioritizing diversity hires. This strategic adjustment is partially a response to the recent struggles that Marvel's television content has faced on their streaming platform, Disney+.

Woke Writers

Marvel's film productions have consistently dominated the box office, captivating audiences worldwide. And the transition to the small screen has not been as seamless.

Disney's CEO, Bob Iger, candidly acknowledged the detrimental impact of Disney+ content on Marvel's overall reputation. In his own words, "They have not been in the TV business at any significant level.... And frankly, it diluted the focus and attention from their movie output."

The decision to revamp the TV division at Marvel Studios was likely in the works long before the WGA strike took center stage. Now the company is publicly stating that these changes are, in part, a response to the developments within the WGA.

The Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA) recently reached between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) has far-reaching implications for all studios. The MBA covers a broad spectrum, including compensation, benefits, working conditions, literary material usage, contract enforcement, and residual payments for Hollywood writers.

Under the MBA, every showrunner must be a union writer, granting them more authority in the selection of their writing staff. Studios like Marvel have a diminished say in choosing their creative teams. To address this challenge, Marvel is adopting a new strategy by focusing on high-quality content.

Disney Marvel to focus on Quality

Instead of creating numerous pilots and gauging audience responses, the studio will now invest in fully developing the entire series before unveiling them to the world. This approach demands a significant shift in hiring practices.

Marvel's plan revolves around hiring only experienced writers and producers. This shift suggests that the studio may prioritize extensive experience over diversity in staffing, foregoing considerations such as age, gender, background, and ethnicity in favor of those who have a track record of producing successful TV shows.

In essence, the WGA agreement places the responsibility of hiring primarily on the union showrunners, prompting Marvel to focus on selecting showrunners who are wholly dedicated to curating the best talent in the industry.

As the dust settles after the historic WGA strike, Disney Marvel's approach to crafting compelling television content seems to have evolved significantly.

The shift towards experienced talent over woke writers underscores the entertainment industry's pursuit of delivering high-quality content to captivate audiences on the small screen. This strategic pivot emphasizes the studio's determination to regain its footing in the competitive realm of television entertainment.
