Ahead of their arrests, gang members targeted an untold number of innocent people. Many children also found themselves coerced into either joining gangs or experiencing attacks on their families.
Of course, all this comes on top of gangs infamously demanding businesses pay various sums of money or become targets themselves.
Pushback from the outside world
In El Salvador, many of the nation’s residents appreciate Bukele making communities safer. However, critics have gone after the president over the means by which arrests are made. They have also made allegations of innocent people arrested alongside the gangs.
At the end of the day, however, many are of the view that what the El Salvador president is doing remains a net positive. His backers have also stated with the gangs out of the picture, people in El Salvador can live their lives without being in constant fear.

On Twitter, Bukele fired back against the critics of his anti-gang efforts. In doing so, the El Salvador president asked why his detractors have such a vested interest in running defense for dangerous and violent criminals.
