On January 17, 2023, Reuters released that President Joe Biden is currently pushing for a judge to reject a request from anti-abortionists who are urging for the withdrawal of federal approval over the drug Mifepristone. Mifeprex (the generic term) is a drug used to terminate early term pregnancies in women, and anti-abortion lobbyist claim that the drug poses a threat to women.
Attorneys for the FDA had this to say about the complaint: “The public interest would be dramatically harmed by effectively withdrawing from the marketplace a safe and effective drug that has lawfully been on the market for twenty-two years.”
The drug in question, Mifepristone, is being sold under the generic name Mifeprex. The FDA announced that this will be available to the public starting January 3, 2023. The drug is used to terminate early term pregnancies (within the first 10 weeks).
This suit is receiving significant attention, likely because of the groundbreaking decision released by the Supreme Court in 2022, essentially overturning Roe v. Wade which stood strong since 1973. The landmark decision allowed women the opportunity for body autonomy, and the majority of the nation was heartbroken at the Dobbs decision in 2022.
