The overwhelming support for this amendment exists both in the French Parliament and among the nation’s citizens. Furthermore, lawmakers’ decision to codify abortion access is seen as a direct response to America’s 2022 SCOTUS ruling on the matter.
Prime Minister Gabriel Attal even stated the vote to amend the French constitution is the country’s way of affirming women’s ownership of their bodies. After the announcement of this vote, Paris’ Eiffel Tower sparkled and displayed “MyBodyMyChoice.”
In France, approximately eight in ten citizens favor abortion access.
Opposition from some in France
Despite the French Parliament’s vote and strong support from ordinary French residents, not everyone views today’s outcome as a victory. National Assembly Deputy Marine Le Pen suggested the vote is nothing more than a political stunt from President Emmanuel Macron.
The Association of Catholic Families and other anti-abortion organizations also decried the constitutional amendment as a “defeat” for women, children, and individuals who believe terminating a pregnancy is wrong.
