Here in America, abortion is a hot-button issue that shows no signs of becoming any less controversial over time. While certain people view the matter of ending a pregnancy with nuance, others look at it as a cut-and-dry issue. In these cases, that typically means banning abortion with no exceptions or allowing abortion without restrictions.
When the Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade judgment in 2022, the issue went back to the states. Red, blue, and purple states are subsequently coming up with their own policies regarding pregnancy termination, albeit with stark opposition from dissenters.
While the United States’ collective view on abortion may vary, the same can’t be said for other nations. In fact, France is currently making international headlines for formally identifying abortion as a constitutional right.
Here’s where France stands on the matter of ending a pregnancy
While gathered in Versailles Palace, senators and parliament members voted 780 to 72 in favor of making access to abortion the law of the land. With this ability to terminate a pregnancy now enshrined in the nation’s constitution, it is a “guaranteed freedom” under French law.
