The company, a retailer and wholesaler specializing in paddle sports equipment and apparel, has sought protection from creditors in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District, signaling financial strain beneath the surface of a thriving market.

A Legacy Brand Faces Financial Headwinds

Operating under Ferrari Importing, Inc. and doing business as GAMMA Sports, the Pittsburgh-based firm has deep roots stretching back decades.

Founded in 1963 by Harry Ferrari, a nuclear engineer and avid tennis player, the company pioneered innovations such as a patented irradiation process to enhance synthetic racket strings. Over time, it expanded into pickleball, tennis, and paddleball equipment, with increasing focus on pickleball as the sport surged in popularity.

Booming Sport, Shrinking Margins

The filing comes even as pickleball continues its meteoric rise. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, the sport has been the fastest-growing in the United States for four consecutive years, with 19.8 million participants in 2024—up 45.8% from 2023 and a staggering 311% increase over three years.

Yet Gamma’s financials tell a different story. Court documents show the company generated approximately $14.23 million in gross sales in 2024 but posted a net loss of about $3.26 million—a gap that proved unsustainable.

Retail Pressures and Industry Shifts

Despite operating online and as a wholesaler, Gamma Sports has not been immune to broader retail challenges. Brick-and-mortar sporting goods stores—key partners for wholesale distribution—have struggled as consumer habits shift.

“Mall stores have lost shoppers to stand-alone and online operations,” said David Swartz, describing a trend that has reshaped the athletic retail landscape over the past two decades.

Compounding the issue are supply chain disruptions and shifting consumer sentiment. Data from McKinsey & Company indicates rising pessimism among consumers in both the U.S. and Europe, with concerns about economic recovery now exceeding levels seen during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Chapter 11 case identifies Gamma Sports as a “small business debtor,” with legal representation provided by attorney Jason Ott. Company president Matthew Ferrari signed the petition, marking a pivotal moment for the family-run business.

For more than 50 years, GAMMA Sports has manufactured and sold tennis and pickleball gear, including paddles, grips, strings, and accessories. The company operates in-house research and development facilities in Pittsburgh, complete with on-site courts used to test and refine products.

Its flagship GAMMA Gut string earned the top ranking from the United States Racquet Stringers’ Association for 23 consecutive years, cementing its reputation in racquet sports.

The brand has also collaborated with organizations like the Professional Pickleball Registry and AIM7 to support player development and training initiatives.
