Rep. Mike Johnson was initially elected to the House in 2016 and previously held the position of vice chairman of the House Republican Conference.
He has been a steadfast ally of former President Trump and actively supported objections to the Electoral College results during the congressional certification of Joe Biden’s presidential victory on January 6, 2021.
On that fateful day, a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol in protest of the election results.
During a press conference, a reporter confronted Speaker-designate Johnson with a question about his support for overturning the election, resulting in a loud chorus of boos from House GOP members.
Rep. Johnson secured the nomination for the speakership late on Tuesday, concluding a tumultuous day that began with the selection of Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer as the party’s nominee.
Emmer Withdraws
Rep. Emmer withdrew from the race hours later, facing strong opposition from the conservative faction of the conference and a rebuke from former President Trump.
