Corruption Still in the Spotlight

The timing of the new code coincides with renewed attention on corruption. In July 2024, a former minister was sentenced to 10 years in prison over graft charges. The United Nations has also urged Indonesia to adopt stronger anti-corruption and transparency measures in its palm oil industry.

Most recently, in March 2025, the attorney general opened investigations into a state-owned gas company amid allegations of embezzlement—underscoring why the evolution of Indonesia’s legal framework remains under intense scrutiny.
