missing in Spain

David Knezevich, 36, was arrested by US Marshals on Saturday at the Miami International Airport. He will be charged with kidnapping his wife, Ana Knezevich, 40. The Florida woman has been missing in Spain since February 2.

When arrested, Mr. Knezevich was returning from his home country Serbia where he had been for several months.

His attorney, Ken Padowitz, told the Associated Press the couple's divorce was not contentious.  Knezevich denies any involvement in the disappearance of his wife. And had been doing everything he could from Serbia to locate help authorities locate her.

Woman Missing in Spain

Sanna Rameau, Ana’s best friend said that “Ana is a sweet, sweet person. Very caring.”

The couple lived in Miami where they have a successful IT business.  Ana, a Columbian-American, moved to Madrid, Spain in December in the midst of the couple’s divorce.

They had been married for 13 years when she disappeared.

The FBI claim that she had left the US after separating from her husband who “did not want to split the marital assets evenly” with her.

Ana Knezevich, a US citizen, told her friends her move to Madrid was an effort to get distance from her rocky marriage.

According to now-unsealed court documents Ana told her friends and family she was terrified of her husband. She also suspected he was tracking her and monitoring her activities.

Alleged Kidnapping

Court documents reveal that David rented a Peugeot 308 in Serbia on January 29.

He then left Serbia and didn’t return home till February 5. It would take around 26 hours to drive the 2,592 kilometers, or 1,610 miles, from Belgrade to Madrid, the FBI said.

When he returned the rental car on 15 March the rental company reported that Knezevich had driven 7,677km (roughly 4,000 miles).

Ms. Knezevich's last known activities include a credit card payment for flowers on February 2. There is also security camera footage of her entering her apartment building at 2.20pm that same day.

She was never seen alive again.

A man the FBI believe is David was also caught on video buying paint and duct tape from a nearby store.

There is also security footage capturing a man resembling David in a black motorcycle helmet spraying paint over a pair of security cameras on the day of her disappearance.

He later left with a large suitcase.

The Texts

David allegedly had his Colombian girlfriend fabricate misleading text messages from his wife. These messages, written in Spanish, were sent to friends and family from her phone on February 3.

The girlfriend called authorities when she saw the missing person case on TV.

They said she was running off with a newfound love that she met in front of her psychiatrist’s office.

“I met someone wonderful. He has a summer house about 2h from Madrid. We are going there now, and I will spend a few days there.”

“There is barely any signal though. I’ll call you when I come back. Kisses,” the Spanish texts said.

The messages were apparently sent to all the missing woman’s friends and family. And were totally out of character for her.

According to Rameau no one that received the texts believed they were from Ana. She flew to Spain and talked to local police and the American embassy to ask for help finding her missing friend. Shortly thereafter, an investigation began.

The insurance cancellation

It was also reported that after she went missing someone impersonating Ana called to cancel company insurance policies. An employee at the IT business claimed that David asked him to pretend to be Ana and cancel the policies, but he refused.

The quest for justice for Ana Knezevich is far from over. The FBI’s multi-national investigation involved the police in Spain, authorities in Ana’s native Colombia, and the Belgrade Interior Attache Office.
