NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies has issued a warning that a near-Earth object or NEO known as 2024 MK, is set to pass closer to Earth than the Moon later this month. 

The asteroid, estimated to be between 394 to 885 feet in diameter, is approximately Washington Monument-sized. For comparison purposes, the Washington Monument is 555 feet tall, and the Eiffel Tower is 1,083 feet tall.

The asteroid will make its closest approach on June 29, coming within approximately 50,000 miles of Earth's orbit, according to NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies.

The news has sparked concerns due to the asteroid's size. Experts have emphasized that while this NEO poses no immediate threat of impact with Earth, its trajectory underscores the ongoing vigilance needed in tracking potentially hazardous asteroids.

Dr. Marco Fenucci, a dynamicist at the European Space Agency's Near-Earth Objects Coordination Centre, co-authored a paper highlighting the asteroid's future orbit crossings, noting the possibility of impacts on Mars over the next 20,000 years.

"Numerical simulations show that all the boulders of the swarm will cross the orbit of Mars multiple times...Some of the boulders will impact Mars in the future," stated the paper, pending peer review.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory further explained the nature of NEOs, noting their diverse sizes ranging from a few meters to several kilometers across. While most NEOs remain at safe distances from Earth, a subset of larger asteroids, termed potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs), merit closer scrutiny due to their proximity to Earth's orbit.

Despite its classification as potentially hazardous, 2024 MK's closest approach will still be about 4.6 million miles from Earth, far beyond any risk of impact. Each NEO is designated based on their proximity to Earth within 120 million miles, approximately 1.3 times the Earth-Sun distance.

In addressing potential impacts, Dr. Svetla Ben-Itzhak, speaking to Newsweek, underscored the destructive potential of larger cosmic bodies. "If a cosmic body of [2024 MK's] size crashed into Earth, it could destroy an entire city and cause extreme regional devastation," she explained, highlighting the global implications of larger asteroids.

NASA's proactive measures include experimental missions like the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), which targeted the asteroid Dimorphos in 2022. The mission demonstrated the capability to deflect asteroids away from Earth by colliding the DART spacecraft at high speed, altering the asteroid's trajectory.

"The impactor blasted over 1,000 tons of dust and rock off the asteroid, ejecting numerous boulders from the system," NASA reported, showcasing the potential effectiveness of such strategies in planetary defense.

As NEO 2024 MK approaches its closest encounter with Earth, NASA continues to monitor its trajectory closely, reaffirming its commitment to planetary defense and public safety. While the current risk assessment remains low, ongoing advancements in asteroid detection and deflection technologies remain critical for future protection against potential cosmic threats.
