Granted, fossil fuel emissions bear the most culpability for NO2 exposure, but researchers believe gas stoves have their fare share of contributions, too. They furthermore feel that roughly 25% of the 200,000 children who have exposure to gas stoves and also come down with asthma are doing so because of NO2.

What’s more is the study asserts these 200,000 childhood asthma cases as costing the United States a whopping $1 billion in yearly healthcare expenditures.

All in all, Science Advances’ findings suggests that Americans’ use of gas and propane stoves contributes exponentially to NO2 exposure and various health problems stemming from it.

Don’t expect gas stoves to disappear anytime soon

If more studies supporting assertions from Science Advances come out, legislation to restrict or eliminate these stoves could soon follow. However, this would undoubtedly garner pushback from Republicans who’d brand such efforts as government overreach.

Like electric cars, electric stoves engender a fair amount of concerns for many Americans. Some feel these appliances aren’t affordable, as they do carry a higher price tag than their gas and propane counterparts.
