💰 The GEO Group Deal: Money, Power, and Protest
The Delaney Hall center—next door to a county jail—had previously served as a halfway house. In February, ICE inked a 15-year, $1 billion contract with The GEO Group to reestablish it as a detention site. GEO executives touted the deal as a windfall, with CEO David Donahue telling investors the facility would generate more than $60 million annually.
DHS said the center passed all inspections and is fully compliant. The facility began the intake process May 1.
With Baraka now under arrest and actively running to replace term-limited Governor Phil Murphy, Friday’s confrontation could either catapult his political standing or crush it. His campaign issued a brief statement: “We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide more details soon.”
For many, this moment marks the beginning of a new era—one where high-ranking officials face arrest, prosecution, and personal jeopardy for opposing federal immigration mandates.
