On July 8th Portia Dickens was killed by a hit-and-run driver in North Dallas.  She lived in Sacramento, California, but had been visiting the Dallas-Ft. Worth area since May. 

Portia was struck and killed on the road. And the driver drove off without stopping to aid her. The DPD has released street cam photos of the brownish-gray SUV that struck the woman.

 The vehicle was last seen driving east on Midpark Road, police said. And noted that it has major dents and damage on the front of the vehicle.

According to the Dallas Police Department press release:  "On July 8, 2022, at approximately 9:34 p.m., the suspect vehicle was traveling northbound on 13400 Esperanza Road and struck a pedestrian, resulting in their death. The suspect's vehicle fled the scene without stopping to render aid. The vehicle was last seen traveling eastbound on Midpark Road."

Dickens always said she “raised kings and queens.” Her son, Yamil Little was wearing a crown when he was interviewed by WFAA, a local television station in Dallas. 

"Love, compassion, empathy, these are the things that could prevent situations how she passed," Yamil said.

"I'm not damning or wanting vengeance, but people should pay for the energy they put out," said Little.

Little said his mother was proudly 36 years clean and sober. And she was a sponsor and friend to “so many” people fighting addiction.

Tyrome Lewis chooses to remember his good friend Portia at her surprise birthday party, a few weeks ago. They celebrated the 71-year-old’s birthday and talked about her work with people in recovery or suffering from addiction.

 Lewis is holding on to those good memories. And trying to celebrate her life in light of the tragedy.

At the time of her death Portia had just attended a meeting. Nobody heard from her after that. But friends and family say stories of her work and the impact she had on others will continue.

"She came here just visiting and got nine sponsees," said Lewis.

"Just when you think you've found somebody to help you through your problems somebody takes her away. Nobody should have to deal with this type of pain," Lewis emphasized.

Tyrome believes that Portia must have helped "thousands" of people in recovery in her time sober. She was a light in the sober community and a tireless worker for those that suffer.

 He's hoping somebody will help solve her hit-and-run.
