Meta initially aimed to acquire 600,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) in 2023. These were needed to support its AI initiatives. The company plan has evolved to increase its GPU count to 1.3 million by the end of 2024. The GPUs will significantly boost its AI training capabilities.
Additionally, Meta’s open-source approach to Llama allows widespread access and contributions. Open-source software often becomes an industry standard, positioning Meta as a potential leader in AI development.
Workforce Adjustments Amid AI Growth
In the meantime, Meta is making workforce adjustments. Last month, Zuckerberg reported in a company-wide memo that Meta planned to cut around 3,600 positions, or approximately 5% of its workforce, as part of performance-based layoffs.
