A groundbreaking research study conducted by the University of Haifa and the Max Stern Yezreel Valley College in Israel has shed light on the connection between problematic pornography watching and serious health conditions. 

According to the research published in Body Image men who consumed pornography excessively were more likely to develop eating disorders and sexual dysfunction.

The study, recently published in Body Image, involved 705 men ranging in age from 18 to 68, with an average age of 32. Among the participants, approximately 68 percent identified as heterosexual, while the remaining identified as sexual minorities.

The researchers gathered information about the participants' pornography consumption habits, engagement in eating disorder behaviors, perceived realism of pornography, as well as their levels of anxiety and depression.

The study also examined body comparison and dissatisfaction with physique and how it relates to pornography consumption. 

Participants were evaluated using the Problematic Pornography Consumption Scale (PPCS), which included statements like "I feel that porn is an important part of my life" and "I become stressed when something prevents me from watching porn." 

The PPCS scale measures when pornography watching becomes an addiction.

The results indicated that regardless of sexual orientation, men with higher levels of pornography consumption were more likely to compare their bodies to those seen in porn and exhibit negative body image feelings.

The research demonstrated that problematic pornography use had negative impacts on other aspects of participants' lives.

 Higher levels of porn consumption were associated with increased instances of eating disorder behaviors, including restricting, bingeing, and purging food. 

It is important to note that the study relied on self-reported data, which can be influenced by social desirability effects. However, the findings provide valuable insights into the potential health consequences of porn use. 

Problematic pornography use

The study also claims that problematic pornography use, in addition to eating disorder behaviors, could negatively impact various aspects of an individual’s functioning and well-being.

This includes sexual functioning problems, hypersexuality, and overall mental health.

“To reduce the risk of developing or worsening eating disorder symptoms, clinicians working with male clients should assess for problematic pornography use and body image concerns during therapy,” the study’s author said.

“Pornography use and eating disorders share common psychological aspects that manifest physically.”

“Both pornography use and eating disorders are behaviors that can act as defense mechanisms to repress emotional pain, and both involve some level of shame, stigma, and secrecy.”

“In addition, both are characterized by obsession, ritual, but most of all, low self-esteem and low body image.”

Previous research 

According to a 2016 study, watching pornography incessantly could contribute to lower sex drives. Researchers found that “chronic Internet pornography use resulted in erectile dysfunction and delayed ejaculation.”

Pornography-related dysfunctions are still being studied. And most have results similar to the 2023 Israeli study. Pornography seems to have negative impacts physically and emotionally.
