[HOLLYWOOD, CA] – Richard Gere, the celebrated actor of “Pretty Woman” fame, has once again found himself in the spotlight, this time for his scathing remarks about President Donald Trump. This unfolds against the backdrop of his relocation to Spain just before Trump’s recent return to office. However, Gere’s present actions have brought to light a past incident that raises questions about his respect for personal boundaries.

  • Global Critic: Gere labels President Trump a “bully and thug” during an awards speech in Spain.
  • “Dark Marriage” Warning: The actor cautions against the “dark marriage of money and power” in the U.S.
  • Cultural Clash: Gere’s 2007 embrace and kiss of Shilpa Shetty sparked outrage and legal scrutiny in India.

As a Legal Analyst and Journalist for USA Herald, I’ve seen how public figures’ words and actions can have far-reaching consequences. In Gere’s case, his recent condemnation of President Trump has opened the door to revisiting a past controversy that speaks volumes about his judgment and awareness of cultural sensitivities.

“Thug” Talk and Millionaire Clowns

During an acceptance speech at Spain’s Goya Awards, Gere, 75, didn’t mince words when describing President Trump. “I’m coming from a place now that we’re in a very dark place in America, where we have a bully and a thug who is the president of the United States,” he declared.

He didn’t stop there, adding, “The millionaire clowns surrounding Trump are immature and narcissistic, a deadly mix.” These remarks, delivered on foreign soil, are sure to ignite strong reactions in the U.S., both from supporters and detractors of the president.

“The Kiss” That Stirred a Nation

However, Gere’s recent outburst isn’t the first time his behavior has drawn criticism and crossed established norms. In 2007, during an AIDS awareness event in New Delhi, India, Gere unexpectedly embraced and kissed Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty on stage. This act, quickly dubbed “The Kiss,” triggered widespread outrage in India, where public displays of affection can be seen as culturally inappropriate or even obscene. Protests erupted, effigies of Gere were burned, and an Indian court issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of obscenity.

While Gere later apologized, explaining that the gesture was intended to demonstrate that kissing is safe and doesn’t transmit HIV, the incident revealed a significant disconnect between his understanding of cultural norms and the sensitivities of the Indian public, and women in general.

A Disregard for Personal Space

Looking back at the incident, it raises questions about Gere’s respect for women and their personal space and boundaries. The unsolicited nature of the embrace and kiss, coupled with reports of his hand’s placement on Shetty’s lower back as he shifted it even lower down her rear during the interaction, paints a picture of a disregard for her personal autonomy.

Amid the investigation by Indian authorities, Shetty downplayed the interaction, possibly fearing obscenity charges herself, and defended it by stating, “so much has been blown out of proportion.”

However, as a father of daughters, it’s concerning to see individuals in positions of power behaving in ways that disregard a woman’s right to her own body and personal space. Such actions highlight the importance of holding public figures accountable for their behavior, both on and off the stage.

Richard Gere’s recent anti-Trump tirade has not only sparked political debate but also resurfaced a controversial chapter in his past. While his right to express his political opinions is protected, his past behavior raises questions about his judgment and sensitivity towards cultural norms and personal boundaries. As a journalist, it’s my responsibility to report on these issues and allow readers to draw their own conclusions.
