Rise of AI Prompts Concerns About Political Misinformation Ahead of 2024 Election

The results showed that almost six in ten people believe AI will lead to the spread of more false information during the upcoming White House race.

Americans have already seen previews of this. AI’s been used to create deepfakes of candidates appearing to make certain public remarks that they didn’t make in reality. Likewise, some folks are beginning to weaponize AI to create photos that aren’t real, yet serve a certain narrative.

In light of this, 66% of polled individuals affirmed their support for federal bans against political ads using AI to create false images. Interestingly enough, a majority of Republicans and Democrats alike favor this.

Furthermore, there is strong support for social media sites to put disclaimers on political content generated by AI. That comes in addition to most people who favor social platforms prohibiting deceptive AI political content or even the government banning any political ads that rely upon AI.

The elephant in the room

As AI continues to evolve and develop, it’s only a matter of time before more people begin calling for the government to regulate it. What this will look like and how it’ll all pan out remains to be seen.
