A sophisticated hacking operation, dubbed “Salt Typhoon,” has shaken the U.S. telecommunications infrastructure. This breach, linked to hackers has enabled extensive spying on American communications. Senator Mark Warner of Virginia called it “the worst hack in our nation’s history.”

The infiltration targeted major telecom providers, including Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, leading to significant security concerns. Federal agencies, including the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI, have advised Americans to protect their digital communications by adopting encrypted messaging apps.

What Is Salt Typhoon?


Salt Typhoon, a nickname given by Microsoft, represents a state-sponsored hacking group with ties to China. The group reportedly gained access to sensitive U.S. communication systems, allowing them to intercept metadata and other critical information. 

According to NBC News, the hackers focused their efforts on targets in Washington, D.C., and even accessed systems used for court-authorized wiretapping.
