Members of the Latino community have raised concerns about possible ICE presence at the fair. Officials emphasized that the fair is meant to be a welcoming space.
Immigration Enforcement Questions
“This is a place for people to leave the troubles of the outside world,” said Karissa Condoianis, a spokesperson for the State Fair. “At the end of the day, we will follow the law.”
Dallas Police Deputy Chief Sam Ismail clarified that DPD does not conduct immigration checks at the fairgrounds:
“We do not have any units or operations specifically to go out and ask for immigration status. We just don’t do that.”
However, he acknowledged that if federal or local agencies request assistance, DPD would review the request on a case-by-case basis.
Despite the legal disputes and security updates, the fair remains one of Texas’s biggest traditions, highlighted by the annual Red River Showdown football game at the Cotton Bowl and attractions that draw more than 2 million visitors each year.
The State Fair of Texas runs from September 26 through October 19, 2024. Tickets are available here.
