A volatile weather system swept across Missouri and Kansas late Thursday, as storms hit Kansas City metro area, unleashing a barrage of severe thunderstorms, warnings, and scattered destruction that kept residents on edge through the night.

The system began advancing across the region Thursday evening, quickly escalating into a series of tornado and thunderstorm warnings that lit up weather alerts across the metro.

Tornado Threats and Damage Reports Emerge

Authorities in Miami County reported trees snapped and power lines down, possibly caused by a small tornado or a powerful microburst—short-lived but intense bursts of wind capable of striking with sudden force.

Further north, the city of Kearney reported damage to homes, with fallen trees and debris blocking roads like a maze of splintered wood and twisted branches. Despite the destruction, officials confirmed that no injuries had been reported.

Emergency management teams also tracked a funnel cloud near U.S. Highway 59, just north of the Douglas-Franklin County line, shortly before 8:30 p.m., adding urgency to an already tense evening.

Flash Flood Warnings Blanket the Region

As the storms intensified, heavy rainfall raised the threat of flash flooding. A warning remained in effect until 4 a.m. for Johnson County and southwestern Jackson County.

According to the National Weather Service, numerous communities were at risk of rapidly rising water, including Kansas City, Overland Park, Olathe, Lee's Summit, Shawnee, Lenexa, Leawood, Raytown, Grandview, Belton, Prairie Village, Gardner, Merriam, Mission, De Soto, Fairway, Mission Hills, Westwood, and Westwood Hills.

Power Outages Spread Across Counties

The storms also knocked out electricity across wide sections of the metro. The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities reported 1,155 outages as of 11:21 p.m.

Meanwhile, Evergy reported 988 outages in Johnson County and 2,001 outages in Jackson County, leaving thousands in the dark as crews worked to assess the damage.

As storms hit Kansas City metro area, the atmosphere felt charged with unpredictability—sirens cutting through the night, skies flashing with lightning, and communities bracing for what could come next.

With debris scattered, roads blocked, and power still out in many areas, officials continue to monitor conditions as cleanup and recovery efforts begin.
