Cristina Coria, a retired Santa Monica police officer, noted that many officers face an array of struggles, including identity crises, financial issues, relationship problems, and substance abuse.

These difficulties often stem from the trauma of the job, lack of public support, family troubles, injuries sustained while on duty, and the feeling of abandonment following such injuries. Officers may also experience a sense of loss and isolation after retiring.

Laura Linder, founder of the nonprofit Exclusively First Responders, highlighted the daily exposure to traumatic events and experiences that officers encounter in the line of duty. The cumulative impact of witnessing these events can lead to profound emotional distress.

Support and Resources

While the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department does not believe these suicides are connected, they are taking proactive steps to provide support and resources to the victims’ families. The Psychological Services Bureau and the Injury and Health Support Unit are actively engaged in addressing the emotional needs of those affected.
