A Backstory

On Friday, President Trump officially declared a national emergency after an ongoing impasse between himself and Democrat leaders. The impasse pertained to illegal immigration and the failure of both sides to reach a compromise. This prompted a 35-day government shutdown. After the shutdown, the president gave Congress three weeks to put forth legislation to keep government open and fund the $5.7 billion dollars for the border wall.

Ultimately, Congress failed at providing the aforementioned funds. Instead, the bipartisan bill gave $1.375 for border security measures. Therefore, President Trump signed the legislation to keep government open; he then declared a national emergency and reaffirmed his promise to build the border wall.

Hours after the president's national emergency declaration, California announced their decision to file a subsequent lawsuit.

How Will President Trump Build the Wall?

The national emergency declaration provides the president with wiggle room as it pertains to border wall funding. Experts and analysts have stated that Trump has the option of using funds from the Department of Defense. However, many individuals on the left are questioning the legality of President Trump's decision to declare a national emergency. Others have altogether stated that there is no emergency on the border.

Standing by the National Emergency Declaration

Despite the backlash, President Trump is strongly standing by his national emergency declaration. On Sunday, White House senior adviser Stephen Miller announced that Trump will "protect" the declaration. This protection also includes vetoing any resolutions which are drafted to block the national emergency declaration.

As many Americans know, the purpose of the border wall is to halt illegal immigration into the United States. Enforcing legal immigration served as a central theme of Trump's 2016 campaign for the White House. During this time, he vowed to build a wall.

Democrats have largely resisted the president's moves to build a wall. Leaders such as Pelosi and Schumer furthermore maintain that a wall is wasteful and ineffective. Instead, Democrats have proposed other measures to enforce border security. In spite of this, President Trump maintains that only a wall will serve as sufficient.
