So far, the New York Times, Vox, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, BuzzFeed, and Politico have gone on record to confirm their companies will not pay for checkmarks on Twitter — blue or otherwise.

Hence, some people have speculated that the push for Twitter users to purchase Twitter Blue or other similar programs is Musk’s strategy of bettering the platform’s financial position.

Though with growing numbers of businesses refusing to pay for checkmarks, this strategy carries the potential to backfire. Likewise, Twitter users who already have blue checkmarks, yet see them revoked, may not feel too inclined to begin paying a monthly fee for restoration.
