A tragic incident involving a Yellowstone bear resulted in a woman's death on a trail near West Yellowstone, Montana, according to a statement by officials this past Sunday. The woman, whose identity is currently undisclosed, was found lifeless on the Buttermilk Trail to the west of West Yellowstone, a town of approximately 1,200 residents bordering Yellowstone National Park.

Grizzly Bear Tracks at the Scene Raise Safety Concerns

Authorities found grizzly bear tracks around the scene, pointing to a possible bear encounter. The Custer Gallatin National Forest, an integral part of the Yellowstone ecosystem, responded promptly by instituting an emergency closure in the areas west of West Yellowstone, addressing what they referred to as "human safety concerns" in relation to the increased bear activity.

Montana’s Growing Grizzly Bear Population

Grizzly bears, federally protected under the Endangered Species Act, have been spreading across Montana. Their population growth in recent years, akin to a river breaching its banks, has led to sightings in locations where the bears have been absent for over a century, such as the Pryor Mountains.

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks views this expansion as beneficial for the long-term sustainability of the bear population, but it also poses significant challenges to Montanans due to potential property damage and physical harm

Rising Bear Activity and Warnings for Residents

Warnings have been issued to visitors to stay "bear aware," with residents reporting an increase in sightings. Grizzly bears, more intimidating than their black bear counterparts, can stand over eight feet tall on their hind legs and can weigh up to 500 pounds for males and 350 pounds for females.

Moreover, these bears can reach speeds up to 35 miles per hour. The recent capture and euthanization of a grizzly bear after several conflicts with people in Flathead County underscored the issue of growing Yellowstone bear encounters.

Balancing Safety with Rare Bear Attack Incidents

Although encounters with grizzly bears may stir fear, attacks remain remarkably rare. The National Park Service reported only eight bear-related deaths in Yellowstone National Park since its establishment in 1872, with 44 injuries occurring since 1979.

Despite these statistics, officials stress the importance of precautions including carrying bear spray, travelling in groups, avoiding carcass sites and areas with bear signs, and making noise in areas with low visibility.

Public Engagement on Bear Safety

A town hall meeting scheduled for Monday evening in Big Timber aims to facilitate discussions about Yellowstone bear safety. As grizzly bear sightings increase, such meetings are crucial for educating and preparing the public on how to safely coexist with these majestic creatures.
