South Africa, in a dramatic move on Friday, hurled serious accusations of genocide against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The nation urged the U.N. court to immediately cease the ongoing conflict in the strife-ridden Gaza Strip, contending that Israel is actively seeking to "destroy Palestinians in Gaza."

Israeli Rebuttal: Swiftly dismissing the claim, Israel's Foreign Ministry labeled it as "lacking a factual and a legal basis." The response characterized the filing as a "despicable and contemptuous exploitation of the Court." Israel consistently emphasizes that it is in conflict with Hamas, not Gaza's civilian population.

Genocide Convention: Both Israel and South Africa are signatories of the Genocide Convention, laying the groundwork for this pivotal case at the ICJ, also known as the World Court.

Apartheid Parallel: South Africa's President, Cyril Ramaphosa, drawing parallels, likened Israel's treatment of Palestinians to apartheid. This striking comparison references the historical racist system that governed South Africa for almost five decades.

Diplomatic Recall: President Ramaphosa, a former anti-apartheid activist, justified the recall of diplomats, stating the world had "sat helplessly" witnessing escalating airstrikes causing extensive damage to schools, health facilities, ambulances, and civilian infrastructure in Gaza.

Staggering Casualties: Health authorities in Gaza report that over 20,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since the conflict erupted on October 7. Israeli officials claim approximately 1,200 people were killed in a Hamas-led attack on Israel that day.
