Trump Accounts Launch July 4 With $1,000 for Eligible Kids

The Trump accounts program offers federal seed money to qualifying children, but parents must opt in and families able to contribute more could gain the largest advantage.

Wall Street’s two largest stock exchanges may soon bring one of their best-known traditions into the White House as the administration promotes Trump Accounts, a new investment program for children.

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will jointly ring the opening bell from the Oval Office. He described the planned ceremony as a way to alert parents that the accounts are available, although Reuters reported that neither exchange had independently confirmed the event when he announced it.

Trump Accounts will begin accepting contributions on July 4. Eligible children born from 2025 through 2028 may receive a $1,000 federal deposit, but parents should not expect the money to appear automatically. A parent, guardian, or other authorized adult must open the account and elect to join the federal pilot program.

The launch combines a government-funded investment benefit, private financial management, and a highly visible White House event. It also raises a larger question about who will benefit most over time. Every qualifying child may begin with the same $1,000, but families with thousands of dollars available to invest each year could build much larger accounts.

Who Qualifies for a Trump Account?

Trump Accounts are available to more children than those who qualify for the federal seed money. Parents and other authorized adults may establish an account for a child who has not turned 18 by the end of the election year and has a valid Social Security number.

The $1,000 Treasury contribution follows narrower rules. It applies only to U.S.-citizen children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, who also have valid Social Security numbers.

Families must submit IRS Form 4547 to establish the account and make a separate election to receive the pilot contribution. The government will not automatically create and fund accounts for every qualifying newborn, despite headlines that may make the benefit sound universal.

Contributions to Trump Accounts Begin July 4

Families, employers, charitable organizations, and other eligible contributors may begin adding money to Trump Accounts on July 4. The general annual contribution limit is $5,000.

Employers may contribute up to $2,500 each year. That amount counts toward the overall contribution limit but generally does not count as taxable income to the employee. The federal $1,000 deposit does not reduce what families or employers may add.

Funds must be invested in approved mutual funds or exchange-traded funds that track the S&P 500 or another index made up mainly of American companies. Like other stock-market investments, the account can gain or lose value depending on market conditions.

The Money Is Locked Up Until Adulthood

Trump Accounts are designed for long-term investing, not emergency savings. Families generally cannot withdraw money before January 1 of the year the child turns 18.

Once the child reaches adulthood, the account will usually convert into a traditional individual retirement account. Withdrawals will then follow IRA rules, which may include taxes and a 10 percent penalty for some early distributions.

Certain exceptions may apply, including qualified higher-education expenses or up to $10,000 toward the purchase of a first home. Even so, parents should understand that this is not a checking account, ordinary savings account, or unrestricted college fund.

The restrictions may help the money grow over time, but they also make the funds unavailable for medical bills, housing emergencies, or other immediate needs during childhood.

Millions of Children Have Already Been Enrolled

The IRS said taxpayers had requested Trump Accounts for more than 4 million children as of March 31. More than 1 million of those children were covered by elections claiming the $1,000 pilot contribution.

The gap between those figures reflects the difference between general account eligibility and eligibility for the federal deposit. An older child may qualify for an account without meeting the four-year birth-date requirement for the Treasury contribution.

Treasury began sending activation emails in May to families that had already submitted the required form. The department also launched a dedicated app to help users activate and manage the accounts.

Treasury Warns Families About Scams

The program’s rollout has already created an opening for fraud. Treasury warned that it will not contact families by phone or text during the initial activation period.

Officials advised parents to use the official app or type the government website directly into a browser. Scammers may imitate the program, send fake activation links, request Social Security numbers, or demand payment to release the benefit.

Families should be suspicious of any message claiming they must pay a fee to receive the $1,000 deposit. They should also avoid submitting personal information through links sent by unknown numbers, social-media accounts, or unofficial email addresses.

Private Companies Will Help Run Trump Accounts

Although Trump Accounts are federally authorized, private financial companies will play a major role in operating them.

The Treasury Department selected BNY to manage the initial accounts and help develop the app. BNY then partnered with Robinhood, which will serve as the brokerage and initial trustee. Treasury says it will retain control over the program’s early operations and custom application.

That arrangement may surprise parents who assume the federal government will directly manage every child’s investment. Instead, the government provides the legal framework and seed money while private institutions handle important brokerage and account-management functions.

The Oval Office Becomes a Wall Street Stage

The proposed opening-bell ceremony would create an unusual overlap between presidential branding and the financial markets.

Stock exchanges traditionally ring their bells from their own trading floors. Companies, nonprofit groups, athletes, celebrities, and public officials often take part to mark major announcements. Hassett said the NYSE and Nasdaq would ring together from the Oval Office, although the exchanges had not confirmed the plan when Reuters published its report.

The event would promote a federal program named after the sitting president while combining the symbolism of Wall Street with the authority of the presidency. Supporters may see that as an effective way to encourage families to invest for their children.

Critics may view it as another example of the White House turning a federal benefit into a branded political production.

Will Every Child Benefit Equally from Trump Accounts?

The government deposit gives qualifying children the same starting amount, but it does not promise equal results.

A family that contributes the maximum $5,000 each year could build a far larger account than one that cannot afford additional deposits. Employer contributions and charitable gifts could widen that difference even further.

The Urban Institute has warned that the program may provide its greatest benefits to families that already have enough income to save and invest consistently. Lower-income households may value the $1,000 deposit but lack the money to continue contributing. They may also need savings they can access during emergencies.

The Cato Institute has raised concerns about the program’s tax structure and complexity. Its analysis argues that Trump Accounts may be less tax-friendly than some existing savings options and could complicate decisions families already face.

Those concerns do not mean the accounts lack value. Even a single $1,000 investment could grow over many years if markets perform well. The larger debate is whether the program will narrow wealth gaps or offer another advantage to households already positioned to invest more.

Parents Should Compare Their Options

Families considering a Trump Account should look beyond the initial deposit and compare it with other financial products. Options may include 529 education plans, custodial brokerage accounts, and Roth IRAs when a child has earned income.

Each account has different tax rules, contribution limits, investment choices, and withdrawal restrictions. The best fit will depend on a family’s income, emergency savings, education plans, and long-term goals.

Parents should also remember that the federal contribution applies only to children born during the four-year pilot period. Older children may still qualify for a Trump Account, but they will not receive the government’s $1,000 seed deposit.

A Financial Head Start With Unequal Paths

Trump Accounts offer a clear benefit to qualifying families. The federal government is willing to place $1,000 into a long-term investment account for a child, potentially giving that child a financial head start before adulthood.

The program could also introduce millions of families to investing. However, the children whose families can contribute thousands of dollars each year may enter adulthood with far more than those whose accounts contain only the federal deposit and market growth.

The planned Oval Office ceremony will focus attention on ownership, investment, and opportunity. The long-term test will be whether Trump Accounts build meaningful wealth across income levels or primarily reward the families already best equipped to keep investing.
