Nearly 25,000 pounds of Buffalo chicken products just got flagged for a problem that has nothing to do with taste and everything to do with paperwork. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Aug. 26 that a batch of frozen, not-ready-to-eat chicken products is being pulled from circulation across five states, after officials discovered the items were "produced without the benefit of inspection."

The Company Behind the Recall

Boston-based Shanghai Ravioli Corporation initiated the recall, which covers products manufactured across a sprawling window — from July 8, 2025, all the way through June 29, 2026. That's nearly a full year's worth of production caught up in a single recall notice, a scope that suggests the inspection gap wasn't a one-day slip-up but a much longer-running issue.

How the Problem Came to Light

The FSIS said the issue surfaced during its own routine surveillance activities, rather than through any consumer complaint or reported illness. Notably, there have been no reports of illness or injury tied to consumption of these products so far — a silver lining amid an otherwise serious regulatory finding.

Why This Recall Carries Extra Weight

The USDA has classified this as a Class I recall, its most serious designation. According to the agency, that classification signals a health hazard situation carrying a "reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death" — language reserved for the most concerning food safety scenarios, not routine quality control issues.

Which Products Are Affected

The FSIS identified two specific products caught up in the recall:

• Cardboard boxes containing 100 pieces of "BUFFALO CHICKEN RANGOON," bearing "Sell By" dates ranging from July 8, 2026, to June 29, 2027
• Cardboard boxes containing 120 pieces of "BENEDETTO'S BUFFALO CHICKEN MOZZARELLA STICK," also carrying "Sell By" dates from July 8, 2026, to June 29, 2027

A Fabricated Inspection Stamp

Perhaps the most striking detail in the recall notice: the products carry false marks of inspection, listing establishment number "EST.18004" — a number that does not correspond to any facility holding a federal grant of inspection. In other words, the packaging implied a level of government oversight that never actually took place.

Where the Products Ended Up

Unlike many recalls that hit grocery store shelves directly, these products bypassed retail entirely. Instead, they were shipped straight to food service locations — restaurants, cafeterias and similar establishments — rather than being sold to individual shoppers.

The States Affected

According to the FSIS, the recalled items were distributed to food service locations across:

• Maine
• Massachusetts
• New Hampshire
• Rhode Island
• Vermont

The Risk of Uninspected Food

The FSIS warned that food produced without proper inspection carries real, tangible risks — it may contain undeclared allergens, harmful bacteria, or other contaminants that could threaten consumer health and safety, precisely because it never went through the standard checks designed to catch such problems.

What Affected Businesses Should Do

Food service locations that purchased any of the recalled products are being strongly urged not to serve them under any circumstances. The FSIS recommends that anyone holding these items either throw them away entirely or return them to the point of purchase, treating the situation with the same seriousness as any other Class I food safety recall.
