Politicians are now joining the fight too, and remarkably, this pushback is crossing party lines in a way few issues manage to these days.

Texas Cuts the Funding Cord

The clearest example yet: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, recently blocked state funding for Flock across Texas entirely. In an order issued Thursday night, Abbott directed every state agency to immediately stop funneling money toward the AI surveillance camera company.

Timing That Raises Eyebrows

Abbott's order landed with suspicious precision — just as The Texas Tribune was preparing to publish a report detailing how the state had funneled at least $30 million in grants to local agencies specifically to purchase Flock cameras. According to that report, the funding stream traced back to an elevated fee Texas lawmakers had tacked onto residents' car insurance policies, meaning ordinary drivers had effectively been footing the bill for a surveillance network many never asked for.

A Campaign Ad That Struck a Nerve

Just days before Abbott's funding freeze, his Democratic challenger, Gina Hinojosa, released a campaign ad taking direct aim at the governor over his handling of Flock. The ad paints a stark picture, warning Texans about "10,000 Flock cameras reading your [license] plate, logging where you sleep and pray," all operating with "no warrant needed" in what it calls "Greg Abbott's Texas" — sharp language clearly designed to make an abstract technology issue feel personal and immediate.

Misuse Allegations Fuel the Fire

The backlash isn't purely political theater — it's grounded in real, documented concerns. Numerous reports have surfaced nationwide describing law enforcement officers allegedly misusing Flock cameras and the data they collect to stalk and harass individuals. That mounting concern has even spawned dedicated websites, such as Have I Been Flocked?, which let users check whether their own license plate has ever been captured by one of the company's cameras.

A Nationwide Pattern, Not Just a Texas Story

Texas isn't fighting this battle alone. Candidates from both parties in states like Michigan and Pennsylvania have built anti-surveillance platforms into their campaigns, criticizing opponents for policies that paved the way for Flock installations in their states.

Nicknames and Investigations Follow

The rhetoric has gotten personal in some races. Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has taken to branding his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, with the nickname "Mass Surveillance Mike" over the issue — a label clearly designed to stick. Meanwhile, Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri announced last week that he's launching an investigation into Flock Safety, the company behind the cameras, aiming to determine exactly how it handles the data it collects.

A Scale That's Hard to Ignore

With more than 120,000 Flock cameras now deployed across 49 states, it's become clear this isn't a fringe complaint limited to a handful of privacy advocates — it's a widespread concern touching ordinary citizens nationwide. And increasingly, it's a concern politicians on both sides of the aisle are finding hard to ignore, regardless of party affiliation.
