A wall of water tore through one of America's most visited natural wonders this weekend, and the search for survivors is still underway. Rescue crews combing the Grand Canyon have recovered at least two bodies since a major flash flood swept through the park, and forecasters warned Monday that more flooding remains a real possibility in the days ahead.

A Lifeline Severed

Saturday's flash flood didn't just endanger lives — it crippled critical infrastructure. The flood severely damaged the only water pipeline supplying the canyon, forcing officials to bar tourists from staying at lodges and hotels inside Grand Canyon National Park and to issue emergency water restrictions for the park's year-round residents.

The Human Toll So Far

At least two people have been confirmed dead, with more than a dozen others still unaccounted for following waves of intense rainfall in the Bright Angel Creek area — a stretch of the park that draws roughly 4.4 million visitors annually.

Where the Disaster Struck

The flooding hit deep within the canyon, near where the Colorado River winds past popular lodges and camping areas — exactly the kind of spot where hikers traversing the canyon rim to rim typically stop overnight to rest before continuing their journey.

A Dramatic Helicopter Evacuation

Dozens of visitors had to be airlifted out of the area by helicopter. Survivors described a massive deluge, park rangers shouting warnings about rockslides, and huge tangles of logs and debris churning down the river as they waited anxiously for rescue.

A Hiker's Harrowing Account

Hiker Daniel Evans said rain fell in waves throughout the day before the worst of it arrived — a brutal 30-minute downpour Saturday afternoon. He'd originally planned to rest through the heat and spend the night near the hard-hit Bright Angel campground area.

Rangers initially told him conditions looked safe. Then, as the rain intensified, that assessment flipped entirely, and they told him it was time to leave immediately. As he scrambled to pack, Evans found himself thinking of the catastrophic floods and landslides that had recently torn through mountain valleys in Nepal.

"The entire time it was raining — the entire time I'm going through all this and packing — I'm just keeping my eyes upstream, just praying that a wall of water isn't coming toward us," Evans said.

Bodies Recovered, Search Continues

The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered Sunday evening near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River, the National Park Service confirmed, though officials offered no further details. By Monday, crews were working to recover a second body, according to a park statement posted on Facebook — again with limited additional information provided.

The Ongoing Search

More than a dozen people remain unaccounted for, and officials are urging anyone who was inside the park when the flood struck to contact park rangers directly, or to let someone know they're safe if they haven't already. Late Monday morning, additional rain fell even as Arizona's Department of Emergency and Military Affairs coordinated closely with the park service and county emergency management officials on ongoing search and recovery efforts.

Why the Grand Canyon Turns Dangerous in Summer

Summer visits to the Grand Canyon carry particular risk, largely due to flash flooding tied to the region's monsoon season. Clear, sunny days can transform into violent thunderstorms and downpours with startling speed. Forecasters cautioned that additional flooding remains possible Monday, or really at any point storms develop in the area.

A Burn Scar Makes Matters Worse

Compounding the danger, rain also fell across part of the Dragon Bravo fire scar — a burn area left behind by a lightning-caused wildfire in July 2025. That fire smoldered for days before erupting into a fast-moving blaze that forced evacuations and destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, along with several cabins and other structures.

Without vegetation to slow it down, a barren burn scar allows rainwater to run off far more rapidly than it otherwise would — turning already dangerous terrain into something even more treacherous.

Geography That Amplifies the Threat

The canyon's steep, rocky terrain naturally funnels water at high speed. What might amount to an ordinary summer downpour elsewhere can transform into a surging wall of water once it's compressed and accelerated by the canyon's narrow channels.

El Niño's Fingerprints on This Year's Storms

This year's monsoon rains carry extra intensity, driven by elevated water vapor levels in the atmosphere — largely a byproduct of a strong El Niño pattern, according to A. Park Williams, a hydroclimatologist at the University of California, Los Angeles. The natural warming of certain Pacific Ocean regions can reshape weather patterns globally, and in the southwestern U.S., that extra atmospheric moisture gets wrung out as intense rainfall, Williams explained.

A Climate Change Connection

Climate scientist Daniel Swain of the California Institute for Water Resources said the link between human-caused climate change and Arizona's heavy rainfall appears quite strong. Just months ago, Swain and his colleagues published a study in the journal Weather and Climate Extremes finding that short-term, intense summer downpours across the West — the same type of event that struck the Grand Canyon — have grown roughly 10% stronger since 2000.

A Setback for Infrastructure Upgrades

Beyond the human toll, the flood dealt a significant blow to an ongoing effort to modernize the water pipeline serving both park visitors and the roughly 1,600 year-round residents of Grand Canyon Village.

A $208 million rehabilitation of the pipeline, along with upgrades to its associated water delivery system, began in 2023. The park service had described the project as a crucial investment to ensure the park could meet the needs of both residents and visitors, with completion originally expected next year.

While the Grand Canyon does maintain large storage tanks for potable water on the South Rim, those tanks won't be refilled as long as the damaged pipeline remains out of service.
