Wall Street’s AI Selloff Exposes A New Risk For The Insurance Industry

What Insurers Are Watching

  • More than $1 trillion vanished during the latest tech selloff as investors questioned whether massive AI spending can produce adequate returns.
  • Banks are simultaneously looking to insurers to absorb billions of dollars of credit risk tied to AI data centers.
  • Insurers may be exposed from several directions at once — stocks, bonds, private credit, data-center financing and policies covering companies caught in an AI downturn.

NEW YORK - More than $1 trillion disappeared from technology stocks during the latest selloff. For insurers, however, the bigger concern may be what sits behind those falling share prices.

Wall Street is beginning to question the economics of the AI boom just as some of its financial risk is moving toward the insurance industry.

Cboe reported Thursday that the technology selloff erased more than $1 trillion in market value as investors reassessed the enormous sums being spent on artificial intelligence. Nvidia fell 4.2%, Intel plunged 28.5%, and the VIX briefly approached 24 as investors moved away from technology shares.

Cboe's market analysis said the market is increasingly demanding evidence that billions in AI spending will produce sufficient returns.

That matters to insurers for reasons that go well beyond whatever Nvidia, Microsoft or other technology shares they own.

U.S. insurers held roughly $8.68 trillion in cash and invested assets, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence's 2026 insurance investment report. Insurers have also been moving deeper into private markets. Privately placed bonds accounted for a record 48.4% of life insurers' bond holdings under S&P's 2026 reporting methodology.

The risk is not simply an insurer's technology-stock portfolio.

It is concentration hiding under different labels.

An insurer could hold bonds issued by hyperscalers, private loans financing data centers, investments connected to utilities supplying those facilities and exposure to the hardware inside them. Each may appear as a different investment. Economically, several could depend on the same thing — continued AI demand and the ability of AI infrastructure to generate enough cash to service enormous amounts of debt.

That connection became much harder to ignore this week.

Insurance Journal reported that HSBC is discussing credit-risk insurance with insurers for data-center project financing, including projects connected to AI. Barclays is separately seeking insurance protection on more than $10 billion of AI-infrastructure credit, while Deutsche Bank has been working on a significant-risk transfer involving roughly $2 billion in project-finance debt that includes data-center loans.

The purpose is straightforward. If insurers absorb an agreed portion of potential losses, banks can reduce their own exposure and free regulatory capital for additional lending.

That also means risk does not disappear.

It changes hands.

There are already signs that financing markets are becoming less comfortable with the amount of AI-related debt being created. Insurance Journal reported that yields on loans and bonds tied to the AI buildout have been rising and that some insurers have indicated their capacity is approaching its limit.

That may be the most important insurance angle emerging from the selloff.

The danger would not necessarily be one dramatic AI collapse. It could be several pressures arriving together.

Falling technology shares could hurt insurer investment portfolios. Higher borrowing costs could weaken AI borrowers. Failed or delayed data-center projects could pressure private-credit holdings and credit-risk policies. A sharp decline in public companies could also generate shareholder litigation, potentially producing D&O claims alleging executives misrepresented AI demand, spending or expected returns.

S&P Global reported earlier this year that insurers were increasing private-credit allocations while placing greater emphasis on liquidity, concentration and valuation risks.

The trillion-dollar selloff now provides a real-world reason to ask exactly where that concentration sits.

For years, investors treated AI primarily as a technology story.

It is becoming a debt story, a data-center story and increasingly an insurance story.

The question is no longer simply whether Silicon Valley's AI investments will pay off.

It is who ultimately absorbs the losses if they don't.
