jet crash in florida

A devastating aviation disaster unfolded in Florida on Sunday when a business jet plunged into a residential neighborhood, killing all nine people aboard and leaving a trail of wreckage, fire and destruction across a major road.

The crash occurred near Cresthaven, approximately 9 miles (14 kilometers) from Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump's resort in Palm Beach County. The aircraft went down at about 12:50 p.m. EST (17:50 GMT), according to officials.

Images from the scene showed a massive crater in the middle of a six-lane roadway, surrounded by flames and scattered pieces of the wrecked Learjet 60. Despite the violent impact, authorities said no one on the ground was reported killed or injured.

The aircraft had departed from Austin, Texas, and was traveling to the Bahamas, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

But the moments before impact were even more alarming. Flight data analysis indicated that the jet was plunging hundreds of feet per second as it approached the ground, while cockpit audio captured a desperate sequence of warnings from the crew.

Cockpit Audio Captures Desperate Final Moments

Crew Reported Turbulence, Ice and Rapid Descent

Air traffic control recordings from shortly before the crash reveal a crew confronting increasingly dangerous conditions.

Someone in the cockpit initially reported "moderate turbulence" and said the crew was "managing the ice." The voice later warned that the aircraft was "picking up precipitation" before requesting to climb.

The situation appeared to deteriorate rapidly. Moments later, the crew member reported that the plane was descending at approximately 10,000 feet per minute.

The emergency declaration that followed was increasingly frantic.

"We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000ft per minute," the crew member shouted, before warning, "we are going to crash into the ground."

Approximately 35 seconds after the initial mayday announcement, the final recorded cockpit remark was chillingly brief: "we're out of time".

Video Shows Aircraft Plunging Toward the Ground

Unverified footage circulating on social media appeared to show the crash from a vehicle's dashboard camera.

The recording shows cars moving along a suburban street before an aircraft suddenly drops toward the ground at an almost vertical angle. Seconds later, the impact triggers a massive explosion and a towering fireball.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described the footage as deeply disturbing during a news conference.

"When you see that video, it's a jarring thing," DeSantis said. "It's like a missile coming down, and a massive explosion, debris going everywhere."

Authorities had not yet identified the people aboard the aircraft at the time of the announcement.

DeSantis said officials had received no reports of anyone on the ground being killed or injured.

Federal Investigators Head to Crash Scene

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the incident a "horrific tragedy" and confirmed that the FAA was dispatching a team to assist with the investigation led by the National Transportation Safety Board.

"Please join me in praying for the families and loved ones of those we lost," Duffy said.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue declared a "mass casualty incident" as emergency personnel responded to the wreckage.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said the aircraft crashed on Military Trail, a busy six-lane road lined with businesses and restaurants.

The investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the aircraft's rapid descent, including the weather conditions and the crew's final communications with air traffic control.

Hundreds of Residents Evacuated as Road Faces Long Closure

The crash did not end with the destruction of the aircraft. Its impact also damaged critical infrastructure in the surrounding community.

During the news conference, DeSantis and local officials said approximately 600 residents from a nearby trailer-park community were being evacuated.

The impact damaged local infrastructure, including water lines, officials said. Military Trail is expected to remain closed for at least 30 days while authorities assess the damage and carry out repairs.

Thunderstorms had been reported in the area around the time of the crash, and heavy rain was falling as officials addressed reporters.

The combination of severe weather reports, the cockpit's references to turbulence, ice and precipitation, and the aircraft's extraordinary descent rate will likely form part of the investigation. However, authorities have not established what caused the crash.

Trump Had Left Nearby Airport About an Hour Earlier

The disaster occurred close to Mar-a-Lago, where President Donald Trump had spent Sunday morning.

Trump departed from a nearby airport aboard Air Force One approximately an hour before the jet crashed, according to the report.

The proximity to the president's resort drew additional attention to the incident, although there was no indication that Trump's departure was connected to the crash.

For investigators, the immediate priority remains understanding how a flight bound for the Bahamas turned into a fatal plunge over a Florida neighborhood.

All nine people aboard the Learjet 60 were killed. While the ground appeared to have been spared additional casualties, the wreckage, damaged infrastructure and evacuation of hundreds of residents left the surrounding community facing a difficult recovery.
