A deadly shooting near Moss Landing State Beach in California left multiple people dead and others injured shortly after midnight Monday, prompting authorities to shut down nearby roads and launch an active investigation.

The gunfire erupted just after midnight along Jetty Road in Moss Landing, a coastal community approximately 18 miles northeast of Monterey, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's office spokesperson Andy Rosas confirmed the shooting to USA TODAY on Nov. 2, saying deputies and other authorities were responding to the scene. However, officials have not yet disclosed how many people were killed or injured.

Authorities Close Moss Landing State Beach After Shooting

Following the violence, California State Parks Police closed Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach at the request of the sheriff's office. The restrictions were put in place as investigators worked at the scene, while residents and visitors were urged to stay away from the area.

The closures turned part of the normally accessible coastal community into a restricted zone as law enforcement officials began examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Despite the fatal incident, authorities emphasized that the danger was no longer considered ongoing.

"There is no active threat to the community," Rosas said.

Investigation Underway as Officials Withhold Details

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has not released further information about the victims, possible suspects or what may have led to the gunfire. Rosas said the department would not provide additional details while the investigation remains active.

For now, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, including whether the victims knew one another or whether the violence involved a targeted attack.

Authorities have confirmed that multiple people lost their lives and others were injured, but additional details are expected as investigators continue working to establish what happened.

The sheriff's office has urged the public to avoid the affected area while law enforcement activity continues.
