spirit halloween store shooting

A Halloween shopping trip turned into a nightmare Friday night when gunfire erupted inside a Spirit Halloween store at Solano Town Center in Fairfield, California, leaving a pregnant woman dead and six others injured.

Authorities identified the woman killed as 31-year-old Constance Hages. Her family told police she was pregnant at the time of the shooting, making an already devastating incident even more heartbreaking.

Fairfield police released additional information Saturday about the six wounded victims, whose ages ranged from 16 to 43.

Four victims remained hospitalized: a 16-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man, a 32-year-old man and a 23-year-old man. The 19-year-old was in critical condition, while the teenager and the two men, ages 32 and 23, were reported to be stable.

Two other victims, both men aged 19 and 43, had been treated for gunshot wounds and discharged from the hospital.

Police Investigate Targeted Attack at Spirit Halloween Store

Police were called to the scene at approximately 8:30 p.m. Friday. As of Saturday, no arrests had been made.

Investigators said their preliminary assessment pointed to a targeted incident involving one suspect inside the Spirit Halloween store. Detectives continued reviewing surveillance footage and collecting other evidence in an effort to determine who was responsible.

While officers worked to establish what happened, witnesses described the terrifying moments when shoppers realized they were in danger.

A witness speaking to KCRA 3's Denzen Cortez said his wife was inside the store when she heard gunfire and saw customers running for their lives.

"I think she told [me] that there was like five, six, seven shots when people were running," the witness said.

Another shopper, Miena Davis, recalled hearing several popping sounds shortly after walking into the store. A second burst followed, triggering a wave of panic as customers rushed toward the exits.

“Everything froze and was like, ‘What was that?’” Davis said. “And then another round of the same sound went off and then a bunch of shoppers started running.”

Davis said people forced open a gate connecting the store area to the mall, creating an escape route for those trying to get away. She fled without her vehicle, leaving it behind in the parking lot overnight.

“It was immediate panic,” Davis said. “You heard a mom crying out for their child. And it just was so surreal.”

Mall-O-Ween Event Canceled as Store Remains Closed

The shooting also forced changes to scheduled activities at Solano Town Center. Mall management announced that its planned Mall-O-Ween trick-or-treating event would not take place following the deadly incident.

Despite the cancellation, the shopping center remained open Saturday, with operating hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Spirit Halloween announced that its Fairfield location would remain closed until further notice, explaining that the decision was made out of respect for those affected and to avoid interfering with the ongoing investigation.

In a statement, the retailer expressed deep sorrow over the violence inside its store at Solano Town Center.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred inside of the Solano Town Center at the Spirit Halloween store in Fairfield, CA," Spirit Halloween said.

The company extended its thoughts and prayers to the victims' families and confirmed that it was cooperating with local law enforcement. Because the case remains under investigation, the retailer referred further questions to the Fairfield Police Department.

FBI Evidence Team Joins Fairfield Police Investigation

The investigation has also drawn federal assistance. FBI Sacramento announced that it was deploying its Evidence Response Team to support Fairfield police as investigators examine the scene and process evidence.

Several other law enforcement agencies also responded, including Suisun City police and the California Highway Patrol.

Fairfield Mayor Rick Vaccaro offered condolences to the victims, their families and everyone affected by the shooting, describing the incident as horrific.

"My deepest condolences go out to the victims, their families, everyone impacting by last night's shooting. Obviously, it was a horrific incident that happened," Vaccaro said.

He also highlighted the community's sense of unity, saying Fairfield's "greatest strength is how we all look out for each other."

U.S. Rep. John Garamendi, whose office is located in Fairfield, condemned the violence in a statement. He said what should have been a weekend of celebration had instead become a tragedy.

"What should have been a weekend of celebration has turned into a tragedy. This horrific situation should never have happened, and I will do everything in my power to ensure it never happens again," Garamendi said.

The Vacaville Police Department also expressed sympathy for its neighboring community, recognizing the emotional impact of the attack.

"Our hearts are with our neighboring community following the tragic events that occurred last night. We recognize incidents like this can weigh heavily on all of us," the department said.

With one victim dead, six others wounded and no suspect detained, the investigation remains ongoing. Detectives continue to review video footage and other evidence as Fairfield residents and the victims' families face the aftermath of a shooting that transformed an ordinary night of Halloween shopping into a scene of tragedy.
